Ramper

Alt-Folk from Ireland

There's a duality to Ramper. It exists in a time that's long gone but it doesn't sound traditional. It's Melancholic but it's hopeful. Sometimes stream of conscious and sometimes labouring the detail. Recognising it's imperfection and showing them off. Pedal Steel and synth beds hold up sharp observations, widescreen guitars, and out of tune pianos in a good way.

2024 seen Ramper open up for artists like Lisa Hannigan, Ryan Mc Mullan, and the Scratch aswell as being chosen as a showcasing artist at the coveted Ireland Music Week. The debut Ramper album 'Loner' comes out March 7th!

Back to the Start

Released February 6th

Memories of a youth spent in growing up in the extreme North West coast of Ireland. I can see now I was lucky to grow up surrounded by and older generation. Aside from my siblings it was a few miles to the next house with children our age. I got the chance to see things through that generations eyes. It's an interesting perspective when your pals are 60 years older than you are. They were dealing with their own mortality and didn't hide it from me. They were always out working and I'd help. Proud and happy while they worked but even I could see the pace slowing down. Morose for a young fella but it taught me to value life.

If You Want A Good Dream

Released September 27th

Playful chords skipping through keys. Double tracked wobbly acoustics develops into widescreen guitars and a big bang of drums at the end! The only instrument on the record I didn't play - I tried, but I'm a bad drummer! This is another track I wrote outside. Working on odd jobs. Cutting wood, building walls, planting seeds with my children and realisation that's more important than other noise in life.

Pale as the Moon

Released January 19th

Pale as the Moon is the first offering from Ramper. The independent release came out on general release on January 19th. It's a reflection of the long, difficult winters spent on the remote west coast of Ireland and how that's shaped us. It's looking at my own childhood and seeing it all again from a new angle as a father. Vicariously imagining two generations in different times. A generation that can admit to feeling of depression and a generations that bottled it up. Driving repetitive guitar picking carry the relentless exposure to the elements with DI'd electrics bringing a dull sunshine and hope with Pedal Steel sparkling out in the ether as the lyrics opens up. Every morning I waken to the bounding footsteps of a healthy young fella full of life bursting through the door. Many's the time that pulled me around and made me realise how lucky I am!

Kept a Curl

Released March 1st

The second Ramper single arrives on March 1st 2024. The vocal register is dropped into the chest voice to deliver a more intimate spoken vibe. The acoustic guitar drives the track on with a restless picking pattern with the piano and pedal steel shine across the gloom. In this set of songs themes of childhood are explored. Always thinking you'd do things different to the way your parents did things but I found comfort in keeping up the old ways. Vicariously reliving a childhood through your oen kids is amazing. Everybody's got advice of some sort and you learn to trust out your own way - even though the truth can get you from the most unlikely places sometimes. It's an honest acceptence that we do our best, get most of it right, accept the bits we get wrong and a promise to learn and get better!
